Ho, Ho, Homeless Calls Upon Wakefield Business Community to Make A Difference This Christmas

12 December 2016

Ho, Ho, Homeless, a seasonal initiative to support those sleeping rough throughout Yorkshire, launched in 2015 following a chance meeting between Geoff Shepherd, a Leeds based entrepreneur, and a homeless man, Kevin, who was sitting shivering on a bridge.

After giving Kevin some money, which he initially refused, Geoff was handed a Christmas card in return for his kindness.

This small gesture started a big movement and led to more than 200 homeless people in Yorkshire receiving warm clothing, food and a gift in the run up to the festive season.

This year the initiative will once again return, but with a difference. Rather than asking for donations of clothing or food, the organisers are calling upon business men and women in Wakefield to collect funds that will directly impact on that area.

Champions for Wakefield will encourage other businesses in the area to adopt Ho, Ho, Homeless as their Christmas initiative of choice and will collect funds that will be used to purchase clothes, food and gifts for the homeless in the area.

Comments Geoff:

“Ho, Ho, Homeless had a huge impact last year on the business community and many organisations got involved to show their support and to make a difference. It isn’t difficult to adopt and as the idea became more appealing it also became difficult to manage. That is why we are using area champions who can manage the collection of funds on behalf of the activity in each location.

“Lots of companies last year simply donated cash rather than giving clients gifts – which typically end up in a raffle anyway. I know of one agency as an example that sent a poem to clients to explain what they had done. They had the most positive response that they had ever received from a Christmas gift, with clients commending them for doing something different and worthwhile.”

This year it is hoped that Ho, Ho, Homeless can support people who have to face a wet, cold and lonely time on the streets with a little something that will make sure they are warm, fed and are able to share some of the festive cheer.

Geoff concludes:

“Lots of companies talk about making a difference but Ho, Ho, Homeless gives them the chance to do something about it. Donations don’t have to be huge, just whatever people can afford. We know that funds are scarce, and particularly at this time of year, but if we all make the effort we can make someone smile and that’s got to be worth a few quid.”
