Heritage Honoured at Pontefract Civic Society Design Awards

1 Market Place and Suzi’s Boutique were amongst the winners at Pontefract Civic Society’s Design Awards.

Winning the Improvement Award, 1 Market  Place was recognised for;

“Returning the main display window to a traditional-style frame, as well as opening up the site windows creating more visual appeal.”

As the property is situated on the corner of both Gillygate and Market Place it was both important for the heritage of the area that the work was carried out to a high standard and in keeping with the local area as well as hopefully becoming a catalyst for other property owners to undertake work either through the THI projects or independently. The work carried out has also highlighted architectural features of the property something which the Civic Society hopes to encourage others to emulate and to enrich the Pontefract streetscape.

Scooping the Countess of Rosse Façade of the Year Award were Suzi’s Boutique in Beastfair. Civic Society Chair, Paul Cartwright commented that;

“We were very pleased the transformation of this Beastfair property, both brickwork and woodwork received attention, as well as creative treatment of the interior. The previous heavy black paintwork was banished in favour of subtle and tasteful cream gloss paint. Suzi's Boutique went one step better than merely dressing the shop window, the family put care and passion into the building, which culminates in the window display and interior fixtures."

Suzi's Boutique also took part in our Christmas Display Competition and we'll look forward to their creativity shining at key trading times and events in the town.

Pontefract Civic Society has run the annual design awards for the past 10 years as part of their work to be an informed and constructive voice on civic issues, promote the best design in all new development, champion the conservation of Pontefract’s heritage and character and initiate practical projects which engage businesses, the community and voluntary groups.
