Cricket Club Bowled Over By Business Support Programme

If it wasn’t for the help of the Enterprising Communities Programme, delivered by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, Wakefield Thornes Cricket Club would have found it difficult to implement the correct legal processes, limiting the services that they are able to offer.

Providing members of the public with qualifications in coaching that are recognised by the English Cricket Board, along with after school clubs, outreach coaching programmes and fitness boot camps as well as venue hire, Wakefield Thornes Cricket Club offers much more than your usual sporting facility.

Due to increased success over recent years and in order to enhance the clubs financial position the team wanted to expand its range of programmes and activities and engage more with the local community. In doing so the club realised that the legal structure they had in place was no longer sufficient enough to safeguard staff and volunteers of the club.

Chairperson Chris Froggett realised something had to be done and contacted the Enterprising Communities Programme for advice and support.

Chris comments:

“I knew we needed to find a way of altering our legal structure into one that would allow us to continue providing members of the public with much more than a sporting facility, but before doing so we needed to be better informed of the options available to us. It was then that I decided to turn to the Coalfields Regeneration Trust for help.

“By signing up to the Enterprising Communities Programme we were taught about the various legal structures we could adopt and the ones that would be the most beneficial both to the club and our members. Through this we were able to register as a Company Limited by Guarantee and a Community Amateur Sports Club, allowing us to adopt a solid legal structure.”

Having been assigned a facilitator to help throughout the process, Wakefield Thornes Cricket Club were not only able to access the online diagnostic system, which allowed the team to recognise the changes that needed to be made within the business, but the team were also provided with funding to cover the costs incurred as part of the change.

Chris continues:

The funds provided as part of the programme were a real blessing; we were able to pay all of the legal fees without it having an effect on the club. Not only that, we are now in a position to apply for funding from other organisations. Something we would never have been able to do without the help of the Enterprising Communities Programme. “
