WAKEFIELD BUSINESS WEEK SPONSOR ASTON BARCLAY SET TO OPEN EUROPE’S MOST MODERN VEHICLE AUCTION CENTRE IN WAKEFIELD

ASTON BARCLAY SET TO OPEN EUROPE’S MOST MODERN VEHICLE AUCTION CENTRE IN WAKEFIELD

Aston Barclay has announced plans to open a new vehicle auction Mega centre in Photon Park near Wakefield, following planning approval by Wakefield District Council.

The 18-acre car auction will open its doors in Q4 2018 and provides 70,000 sq ft of space which Aston Barclay will transform into a new northern Mega auction. The aim is to make Wakefield the most modern and technologically advanced auction facility anywhere in Europe.

With banks of video screens throughout the brand new building and a high-specification internal finish, it will resemble a dynamic retail environment. Interactive screens, Apps and Artificial Intelligence (AI) will further transform the buying and selling experience both physically and online.

With the ultimate capacity to sell 50,000 used vehicles annually, Wakefield will contribute to Aston Barclay’s plan of doubling its sales volume from 80,000-160,000 vehicles by 2022. It will feature two glass-fronted auction halls and is set to employ around 90 full and part time staff once it is fully operational in early 2019. It has first class road links with the M1, M62 and A1.

Continued strong demand from vendors and buyers has meant Aston Barclay’s current Leeds auction has outgrown its existing six-acre site, and its staff and customers will be relocated to Wakefield.

Aston Barclay Leeds is consistently voted as the UK’s top auction site by its vendor customers. High profile dealer and leasing customers have already enquired about entering cars into the new Wakefield sale programme when it opens for business in Q4.

The Wakefield announcement signals the start of a summer of exciting new digital and online initiatives being launched by Aston Barclay. Virtual Auction combines the power of an online digital auction experience for buyers with all the benefits of a physical sale, enabling Aston Barclay to sell used vehicles any time, any place, any where.

Aston Barclay’s CEO Neil Hodson said: “There will be no other auction like Wakefield in the UK or Europe. It offers a five-star building with enough space to auction and store hundreds of cars all undercover. We will create an atmosphere where our vendors and buyers enjoy spending time, with a gym and a gourmet restaurant. We want to make it their ultimate destination of choice.” he added.

This announcement follows the opening of an 18-acre Midlands Mega Centre in Donington in September 2017, which acts as the blueprint for Wakefield.

It is set to sell 20,000 cars in its first year following buyers and vendors embracing a high technology digital environment combined with a five-star physical auction experience. New vendors will be coming on stream as its new land is developed later in 2018.

Cllr Denise Jeffery, Cabinet Member for Econiomic Growth and Regeneration said: “We are delighted to welcome Aston Barclay to Wakefield. The company will bring quality, well paid jobs to the area, including their digital software development team. We have worked hard with the senior management team to ensure we land the company here in Wakefield.  Our economic development team will continue to support the company and ensure our residents can access the great job opportunities available.”
