Wakefield Works… works! Free job seeking scheme to return after 95% of attendees find it useful

Wakefield Works, the successful employer-led campaign that is delivered thanks to a partnership between JobCentre Plus and First Choice Recruitment, will return to the region in September and October after supporting 1,059 people to find work.
The event, which aims to bring together employers from a diverse range of sectors including manufacturing, retail, care, property, leisure and hospitality, reported its strongest levels of engagement yet, encouraging those delivering the scheme to extend it and arrange a further event before the end of the year.
Last February and March, free sessions were held at centres in Hemsworth, Pontefract, Castleford and Wakefield. Despite the weather, which saw some of the heaviest snow falls in recent years, there was an excellent turn-out with people travelling from across the region to attend.
Amanda Newlove, Employer and Provider Manager at JobCentre Plus, comments: “After speaking to our work coaches, it was clear that many people who had been unemployed for a long time were worried about attending but they soon felt relaxed thanks to the great atmosphere and the friendly communications from the local employers and partner organisations who supported the events.
“Attending the event was a huge confidence boost to jobseekers who were nervous about speaking to employers and talking about themselves, as the job seeking experience can be quite daunting for some people. One lady, who was on ESA, took her first step to apply for work by arranging an interview for a voluntary work placement with the British Heart Foundation. Our event gave her the encouragement she needed to do this.”
Out of the 241 customer questionnaires completed during each event, 76% of attendants rated the events as 4 or 5 out of 5.

He says: “These invaluable sessions give attendees the chance to speak directly with employers and find businesses they may not have known were out there. People left the workshops with a clear idea of where they were going and what jobs they would target. Thanks to the help they received with their CVs they were also able to better understand why making the very best first impression is so important.
“Some people even managed to get advice from the West Yorkshire Police about how to improve their applications whilst others spoke to the NHS. There’s been a number of second interviews from the event and candidates have been welcomed to work trials. It’s just fantastic for the local area and I’m looking forward to what Autumn’s sessions will bring.”
Wakefield Works will return on the following mornings, between 9am and 12.30pm on the 11th, 19th and 26th September and 3rd October.
