Wakefield's first entirely gluten-free bakery opens in city centre

27 Jul 2026

A brand new bakery offering gluten-free treats has opened up in the city centre.

The Unglutened Bakery, on Cross Street, opened on Wednesday – with people travelling from across the region to get their gluten-free fix.

Offering a range of bakes including bagels, croissants and cakes, the shop is the first-of-its-kind within the district.

The bakery was inspired by owner Amy Barone’s inability to find an affordable but delicious gluten-free treat.

“It’s been in the works for quite a few years. “ Amy explained.

"'I’m gluten intolerant and the gluten-free options at shops are always so expensive or they just don’t taste very good – so that was why we came up with the concept.”

Primary school teacher Amy co-owns the bakery with husband Carlo, a chef turned scientist who became a full-time dad to their four children a few years ago.

Prior to opening, the bakery built-up a strong social media following, with many fans keen to visit.

"The support we’ve had even before we were open has been just incredible.” Amy continued.

"The past couple of weeks have been crazy but it’s worth it.”

Upon opening, the shop saw queues down the street, with most of the bakes selling out within a few hours.

Customers bulk bought bakes, eager to stock up on the gluten-free goodies whilst they were available.

One customer, who has celiac disease, praised the bakery stating that there was “nothing like this in the area” and that it was “lovely to see a place entirely gluten-free.”

Amy and Carlo have also shared that plans are in place to launch online, and offer a delivery service over the coming weeks.
