Wakefield Labour Club wins CAMRA Club of the Year Award for 15th year running
Wakefield Labour Club, known locally as the ‘Red Shed’, has been named Club of the Year by Wakefield and District CAMRA.
The award was presented during the Annual East-West Charity Beer Festival, held from Thursday, May 14 to Sunday, May 17.
Matt Hallas, club president, said: “We are happy and proud to support real lle in Wakefield, Yorkshire, and nationally.
“It has again been possible to win this award through a dedicated and hard-working team and committee.”
Club secretary Linda Bratley added: “We are proud to have been awarded CAMRA’s Club of the Year award for 15 years running.
“Thank you to all our members and volunteers for their continued help and support of the committee and all the bar staff.”
The presentation attracted a crowd of regulars, locals, and CAMRA members from across the district and beyond.
Russ Gaunt, Wakefield CAMRA secretary, presented the award and said: “Congratulations to the Red Shed for again winning the Club of the Year.
“The Red Shed is always a great and welcoming place to visit. It has always a good selection of well-kept real ales.”
The Club of the Year is decided by a vote of Wakefield CAMRA’s 600-plus members, who rank their top three clubs selling cask ales in Wakefield, and surrounding towns and villages.
The Red Shed, on Vicarage Street South, serves five cask ales, all in top condition via hand pumps.
It prioritises beers from smaller and local breweries whenever possible.
During the East-West Beer Festival, 22 cask beers were available, split evenly from either side of the Pennines.
Mr Gaunt concluded by highlighting plans for future celebrations.
He said: “We look forward to a joint celebration of Wakefield CAMRA’s 50th Anniversary and the Red Shed’s 60th Anniversary, with a number of collaboration brews from our local breweries over Friday, August 7 and Saturday, August 8.”
CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, was formed in 1971 to protect traditional cask ales from mass-produced keg beers.
The Wakefield branch was established in 1976 and has more than 600 local members out of 145,000 to 150,000 nationwide.
The group brings people together through their love of real ale, cider, and perry, while supporting the tradition and heritage of the pub.
