Primark set to take over former Debenhams store at Trinity Walk
Primark is moving to a new location in Wakefield – the former Debenham’s unit at Trinity Walk.
The move comes after it was announced in March that the clothing store’s current home, The Ridings Shopping Centre, will be demolished to make way for a major regeneration project.
Plans include demolishing four high rise blocks of flats above the centre so new homes and leisure facilities can be built.
In January, Marks & Spencer announced it would be moving out of The Ridings and opening a new food hall on the outskirts of the city centre.
Primark said there is no set reopening date for the new Wakefield store with more updates are expected later this year.
The company said all 70 colleagues in Primark’s Wakefield store team, including nine managers, are expected to move with the store from its current location in The Ridings Shopping Centre, with its exact store closure timing still to be confirmed.
Primark’s Director of Sales for the North East, Conor Walsh, said: “Our new location at Trinity Walk keeps us in the centre of Wakefield, which has been an important part of our history on the UK high street since we first opened our doors here in 1994.
"We’re progressing with the construction of our new store and works are expected to begin imminently, which we’re all excited to see.
"For now, our store in The Ridings remains open as usual and I want to thank all our store colleagues for their support and patience as we prepare for what’s next for Primark in Wakefield.”
James White, Centre Manager of Trinity Walk, said: "It is fantastic to see Primark choose to join Trinity Walk and they will be one of our biggest signings to date.
"This is a major moment. Thanks to Primark, and of course the exciting Tenpin entertainment centre, the whole of the former Debenhams unit will be brought back to life - which will no doubt attract many new visitors to Wakefield while providing for our loyal, existing audience."
