Plans submitted for new petrol station and store in Pontefract

14 Jul 2026

Plans have been submitted for a new a service station close to Pontefract town centre.

The scheme involves building a petrol station, retail store, jet wash bays and electric vehicle charging bays on land off Wakefield Road.

Documents submitted to Wakefield Council on behalf of applicant Yakub Valli said the 0.5 site had been vacant “for some considerable time.”

A petrol station previously operated from the site during the 1990s.

There is housing to the south, west and north of the site and an industrial area to the east.

The scheme also includes creating car parking spaces for customers and a new access to the business.

A planning statement said: “We believe that the proposed development meets good design standards that promote safe, secure and accessible streets and places, maintains local identity and respects the Pontefract townscape and setting.

“The proposed development aims to bring jobs, amenity and access which will represent a positive contribution to the local area, creating around ten new full time and part time employment positions for local people.

“On balance we consider that the development would not give rise to any unacceptable consequences for the environment, community or other public interests and will provide a high quality refuelling facility in a location that would benefit from such a service.”

A similar application for the site was approved in 2023 but the development was not completed.

Planning officers have yet to determine the latest application.
