Plans lodged for alcohol and entertainment permit at city’s former crown court

08 Jun 2026

Proposals to sell alcohol and provide entertainment at Wakefield’s old crown court building have been put forward.

The building, which dates back to 1810, is currently being transformed into a ‘cultural destination’, featuring a food hall, offices, events space and studios.

Developer Rushbond was granted planning permission for the renovation of the Grade II*-listed building in August last year.

The company, which specialises in heritage properties, said the development would be the “final key piece” in the regeneration of Wakefield’s civic quarter.

The application to Wakefield Council requests permission to sell alcohol for consumption on or off the premises between 10am and 11pm daily.

Permission is also sought to allow plays, films, indoor sport, dance and live music to be held at the venue.
