Plans approved to replace 1960s Pontefract town centre apartment block

19 Jan 2026

Plans have been approved to build a new apartment block in Pontefract town centre.

Wakefield Council has given the go-ahead to the scheme to replace Warren House, which was demolished by last year.

The 1960s five-storey building formed part of Horsefair Flats, a complex of high, medium and low rise blocks containing more than 250 homes.

Vico Homes, previously Wakefield District Housing, was granted permission to knock down Violet Pritchard House, Silkstone House, Francis Lane House and Warren House in March 2025.

The social housing provider plans to replace the buildings with new housing projects, according to documents submitted to the local authority.

Proposals for the Warren House site include constructing 23 apartments containing 15 two-bedroom and eight one-bedroom homes.

Plans for the new structure include a shared roof terrace for residents to “create opportunity for recreation and connection back to the surrounding heritage.”

The site is within the Pontefract Castle conservation area and is less than 300m from the medieval monument.

The council’s conservation officer said the new building “would better reflect the historic layout of the site and its surroundings” and “result in a positive change when viewed from the castle.”

A planning statement submitted by Vico Homes said: “The proposed development will contribute significantly to the economic, social and environmental objectives of sustainable development.”

Approving the scheme, an officer’s report said: “It is considered that the proposal would be acceptable with regard to its impact upon access and highway safety, flood risk and drainage, the visual impact of the development along with its impact upon the historic environment.”
