New lease of life for old Barclays Bank in Pontefract
Property developer Jodie Maskill has given the historic old Barclays Bank building in Pontefract town centre a new lease of life.
Jodie said the empty Grade II listed building in Market Place was falling into disrepair when she bought it two years ago.
Jodie's company, Maskill Investments, has signed up three independent businesses for the ground floor.
And Jodie is transforming the top two floors into eight high quality apartments, which she is hoping to let out after holding an open day on September 5.
The independent businesses signed up are Café Banco Blanco, run by Angel Davey; Kazarius Tattoo, run by Marius Cazacopol and DA Dance & Sculpt Studio 22 run by Darcy Leech.
Angel, 20, from Pontefract, hopes to have the café open by the end of September.
DA Dance and Sculpt Studio 22 is already open and Kazarius Tattoo is due to open mid August.
Jodie previously worked in the corporate world and was an operations director at Jaywing PLC.
Losing her dad to cancer in 2023 led her to a career change.
Jodie said: "I just thought life is too short. I always wanted to go into property.
"I started with buy to lets and then started doing commercials."
Jodie added: “I’m very proud to own it. After Barclays left it was falling in to disrepair and I saw a new vision for it and trying to make the most out this historic building.”
The property dates back to the 1760s and is thought to have been designed by James Paine, who was also involved with Nostell Priory.
It was taken over by local bank Leatham, Tew and Company in 1801 before being bought by Barclays in 1907.
Extensions to the building have been made over the past two centuries.
