Liquorice Bush pub in Pontefract open after refurbishment
A historic Pontefract town centre pub closed for more than a year has been reopened after a refurbishment.
Pub manager Dave Sheldon said the Liquorice Bush had been closed since April 2025.
It reopened just over two weeks ago after a refurbishment and now boasts nine screens showing sports.
The pub, on Market Place in Pontefract town centre, is now run by WF3 Pubs Ltd, who have eight pubs across Wakefield district.
Mr Sheldon said: "The first couple of weekends have gone well. The opening weekend was really good. we had stilt walkers and DJs."
"we have DJS on Friday and Saturday and we want to get live music at weekends. During the week we are going to be having quizzes on and a karaoke.
"The reaction from customers has been really good we have had a lot of compliments.
"People are happy its open again we have we have had good comments about the refurbishment."
The Grade-II listed building, which is in a conservation area, dates back to the late 1700s.
Pontefract’s history with liquorice dates back centuries.
The market town is renowned for its cultivation and production of the liquorice, particularly Pontefract cakes.
