Hospital Radio Awards: Radio station which serves Dewsbury, Wakefield and Pontefract hospitals wins national awards
A radio station which serves hospital patients and staff across the Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust has won at a national awards ceremony.
HWD Hospital Radio, which serves Dewsbury District, Pontefract and Pinderfields Hospitals, won two trophies at this year’s Hospital Radio Awards.
The awards showcase the stations and presenters who spend their free time entertaining those in hospitals up and down the country.
The station’s Thursday evening Rock Show, presented by Simon Parrock, clinched the gold award for Best Specialist Music Programme.
Simon has been a presenter on the station on and off since he was 16-years-old and has hosted The Rock Show since 2011.
Award judges said: “A compelling show with a presenter who knows and loves his music.”
A bronze award in the Best Male Presenter category went to Big Band Jazz Show presenter Jeremy Vicars, whose love of the genre comes from his involvement with the former Huddersfield Big Band Jazz Society.
Jeremy said: “Having grown up in a jazz household, I’ve spent my entire life either listening to big band jazz, or playing trumpet in big bands, jazz groups and being a singer.
“The opportunity to present my favourite music via my show is such a privilege. I have an enormous jazz and big band music collection and this show gives me great pleasure in being able to share it with my audience.”
HWD Hospital Radio broadcasts online, so anyone can hear it via its website or on smart speaker.
The station is a charity run by volunteers and is always on the lookout for new members to carry out various roles.
It also needs help with fundraising as it is looking to urgently upgrade its studio equipment.
