Horbury-based building manufacturers to transform Flushdyke Kennels

21 Apr 2026

Plans to reopen the kennels are now underway – with local building manufacturing company, IDesign Fabrications at the helm.

The Horbury-based company already design and manufacture a range of kennels and catteries for animal centres and charities across the country.

Now, they plan to open their own by redeveloping and transforming what was Flushdyke Kennels.

Owner of IDesign Fabrications, and now IDesign Kennels, James Henry said: “These kennels are very local to us.

"And we’ve been building kennels for so long, we thought why don't we go one step further and build our own.”

Work to transform the kennels will begin later this month, with it expected to cost over £300,000.

Plans include knocking down enclosures, creating a larger open space for dogs, and rebuilding the kennels themselves.

“The aim is to turn it into a place that's livable for dogs,” James continued.

"We’ve got rescue dogs ourselves and we know how important these centres are so we want to build a good one in Wakefield.”

Ultimately, the centre will aim to not only look after rescue dogs and help them find a home, but act as boarding kennels.

This means that other charities can rent out spaces at a discounted price, to ensure dogs have a safe place they can stay.

James also wants to partner with rescues across the region so they can help influence the kennels’ design.

"We want rescues on board to to tell us what they need, because I can build it and I can design it, but I've never worked in one.” He explained.

Since announcing their plan on social media last month, James revealed that the community has already showed them lots of support.

"I’ve already had 70 job offers!” James stated.

"It’s a place a lot of people are passionate about, so we just want to do it justice.”

There is no set opening date for the refurbished IDesign Kennels, but work is expected to finish later this year.
