Four new flats approved for Featherstone site

A long-vacant site in Featherstone is set to be changed into four new flats after Wakefield Council approved plans for its redevelopment.

The site off George Street, just outside the town centre, currently contains a brick garage, gravel and some low-lying vegetation.

Planning permission has been granted for the garage to be demolished and replaced with a two-storey building containing four one-bedroom flats.

The scheme, submitted by N&CO Developments Limited, will provide two flats on the ground floor and two on the first floor.

Each flat will contain a double bedroom, kitchen and lounge area and shower room.

One parking space will be provided for each flat, with outdoor amenity space, cycle storage and bin storage also included.

The building will have red clay brick walls, with an orange brick central panel, along with a pitched roof covered in blue/black fibre cement slate tiles.

The design has been influenced by the Victorian terraces on the opposite side of George Street.

A design and access statement submitted with the application said the site had been undeveloped for more than a decade and described the existing garage as being in a poor state of repair.

It said the vacant site “affords the opportunity for anti-social behaviour and activity”.

The statement said: “The overall design intent is to achieve a development which asserts a terraced residential character to George Street which is informed by an understanding and contemporary application of that which exists to the north of the street.”

The four homes are intended to be made available through Wakefield Council as council housing for people in need, according to information supplied by the developer.

Grant Nicholson, founder of Nicholson & Co, said: “We're delighted to have secured planning permission for this development and look forward to transforming a long-vacant site into much-needed, high-quality homes for people in the local community.

“At Nicholson & Co, we're passionate about bringing underutilised land back into productive use, and this scheme is a great example of how thoughtful development can create lasting benefits for an area.

“We look forward to working closely with Wakefield Council to deliver four modern, energy-efficient apartments that will provide quality council housing for those who need it most.”
