Engineering firm recruited for £27m bus station transformation
Engineering firm HJ Consulting Engineers (HJCE) has won a contract to support development of a new regional transport hub.
The move will see the Wakefield-based firm provide its engineering services and expertise to main contractor Lindum Construction, which is pushing forward with a £27m plan with Kirklees Council to transform Huddersfield Bus Station.
HJCE’s involvement, which also covers technical and consultancy support for a development that will feature the latest in low-carbon construction methods, is part of a larger scheme of works.
The new-look bus station comes under broader plans by the council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority to create a better-connected region, which will improve access to public transport services across West Yorkshire..
Designs include an improved interior, real time information, better accessibility for all bus station users, new cycle stands, a Changing Places Toilet, and upgraded public spaces and entrances and exits.
Some retail and office frontages will also receive a facelift.
Expected to be completed in spring 2028, the facility’s main feature will be a sweeping entrance canopy that will feature a “living roof” comprising grasses and wildflowers and also 96 solar panels to generate electricity.
Upperhead Row car park, situated above the bus station, is also undergoing modernisation, and includes structural enhancements, new fire detection and security systems, upgraded entrance and exit ramps and lighting, and ramp safety heating to counteract snow and ice.
HJCE managing director, Andrew Fairburn, said: “Our involvement reflects the challenges of the construction environment, providing engineering solutions that will allow the bus station to remain operational during the redevelopment phase while allowing accessibility to the bus station environment for all users.”
Gary Allen, construction director at Lindum Construction, added: “It’s great to be working with HJCE, who are providing a high-quality solution for a complex engineering problem.
“Their expertise will go a long way to help deliver a much-needed, first-class public transport facility for the people of Huddersfield.”
