Dad and daughter duo to open ladies gym in Wakefield to create space “where women feel comfortable to work out”
Base Fit Ladies Gym – created by dad Shane Poole and his 18-year-old daughter Connie – is located at Moor Park Business Centre and will officially open on Monday, January 5.
Connie – who has recently graduated as a dance student at CAPA College – came to her dad with the idea of opening a gym “where women feel comfortable to work out” around a year ago, when she was deciding what to do after her studies.
Connie said she has always been interested in fitness, but as a woman, found that the gym could be “quite an intimidating place.”
On starting a business at such a young age, Connie said: “Obviously it’s overwhelming, but I am really excited and I think we have the capabilities to make it work.
“I have the experience [and] have always been into my fitness.”
“I am in such a good position to be starting it now – it’s a really big step,” she added.
The premises used to be office space, and Shane and Connie spent around nine weeks refurbishing it into the gym, which is now fully set up.
Sessions will be for groups of around six women, with a focus on strength and conditioning, health and wellbeing, and nutrition.
Shane, a professional photographer and owner of a photography business, described how his daughter came up with the idea for Base Fit: “Over a year ago she came to me with the idea of creating a safe, supportive place where women could train without the pressure or intimidation of a traditional gym.
“As a dancer, she’d seen first-hand how many women lack confidence in gym environments, so we spent the last year planning the project together. Connie went on to qualify as a personal trainer, and we’ve now opened Base Fit as a co-owned, father-and-daughter business.”
Base Fit can be found at Suite G First Floor Moor Park Business Centre, Off Thornes Road, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF2 8PF.
