Aldi unveils £7m Ossett store plan set to create 40 jobs
Aldi has unveiled plans for a new store in Ossett.
The retailer wants to build a new food store on a brownfield site at Royds Mill, off Leeds Road in the town, currently occupied by a mattress distributor set to relocate.
If approved, the development is expected to create around 40 full-time equivalent jobs, with roles paid at £13.50 per hour.
Mark Stringer, real estate director for Aldi, said: “Royds Mill is a highly accessible location with huge potential, and our proposals would transform this brownfield plot of land into a modern, attractive food store that brings greater choice, convenience and value to local people.
“Alongside creating new jobs, this investment will support the town’s ongoing growth and ensure residents have easier access to affordable, high‐quality groceries.”
The firm said the project represents an investment of more than £7 million into the economy.
The proposed store would feature 116 parking spaces, including bays for disabled customers, parents with children and electric vehicle charging points.
Plans also include new landscaping, improved pedestrian routes and upgrades to the Leeds Road junction.
Aldi says its nearest stores, including one in nearby Dewsbury, are becoming increasingly busy, and the Ossett site would improve access to affordable groceries for residents.
A public consultation runs until April 27, with an exhibition event on April 22 at 7pm, at Ossett Cricket and Athletic Club, Dimple Wells Road.
