Aldi submits plans for new store in Ossett
Aldi has submitted plans for a new supermarket in Ossett.
The retailer wants to build the store at a brownfield site at Royds Mill, off Leeds Road.
The scheme involves demolishing industrial premises which currently occupy the 2.3-acre site, including The Sleep People Limited, Starlight Beds and The Foam People.
Documents submitted to Wakefield Council said the development would create 40 full-time equivalent jobs and represented a £5m investment in the town.
The proposed store would feature 116 parking spaces, including bays for disabled customers, parents with children and electric vehicle charging points.
Plans also include new landscaping, improved pedestrian routes and upgrades to the Leeds Road junction.
Aldi said its nearest stores, including one in nearby Dewsbury, are becoming increasingly busy, and the Ossett site would improve access to affordable groceries for residents.
A statement submitted on behalf of the retailer said: “The scheme is also eminently deliverable, with Aldi targeting a start on site immediately following the granting of planning permission.
“The scheme will therefore provide an important, immediate term boost to the local economy during what remains a very challenging economic period.”
The planning application was submitted following a public consultation carried out in April this year.
Mark Stringer, real estate director for Aldi, previously said: “Royds Mill is a highly accessible location with huge potential, and our proposals would transform this brownfield plot of land into a modern, attractive food store that brings greater choice, convenience and value to local people.
“Alongside creating new jobs, this investment will support the town’s ongoing growth and ensure residents have easier access to affordable, high‐quality groceries.”
