'A heartfelt thank you': The Prince of Wales Hospice runners raise over £20,000 at Pontefract 10K

06 Jul 2026

A total of 148 dedicated supporters took on the Pontefract 10K as part of The Prince of Wales Hospice team, raising an incredible £20,139 for the hospice.

Bringing together runners from across the community, the event saw local people unite to support hospice care at a time when demand for services rises.

The hospice says ‘a heartfelt thank you’ to every runner, supporter, volunteer, donor and cheerleader who played a part in this year’s Pontefract 10K.

Whether fundraising, volunteering on the day, cheering from the sidelines or taking on the challenge itself, each person contributed to the event’s success.

Their generosity and dedication will help ensure local patients and their families continue to receive compassionate care and support when they need it most.

Among the runners were local schools, businesses and individual supporters, including teams from organisations such as Castleford Academy, Allerton Bywater Primary School, YourSpace, Solupak and Ridley & Hall.

Many took part in memory of loved ones or as a personal challenge, highlighting the deep connection between the Hospice and the community it serves.

Emma Thwaite, who was part of the hospice team, said: “Taking on the Pontefract 10K was a challenge, but the atmosphere on the day was absolutely buzzing.

"Seeing my four-year-old son cheering me on from the sidelines gave me the boost I needed, and having him join me to cross the finish line made it a really special moment.

"Knowing I was raising money for such an important local cause made every mile worthwhile.”

Katie Storey, Community and Partnerships Fundraiser at The Prince of Wales Hospice, said: “The £20,139 raised is enough to fund over five weeks of specialist care for one patient.

"We are so grateful to every person who chose to support the Hospice through this year’s Pontefract 10K.

"With only around 35 per cent of hospice funding coming from the NHS, community support like this plays a vital role in keeping our services running.”

The Prince of Wales Hospice is encouraging supporters to get involved in upcoming events or sign up now to be part of Team Hospice for next year’s Pontefract 10K.
