Wakefield Waterfront has seen much change in recent years with significant development making it one of the most important areas of the city. The David Chipperfield designed Hepworth Wakefield opened in 2011 exceeding all expectation with over 500,000 visitors in its first year and was shortlisted for the prestigious Stirling Prize. Mail order company Redcats took up residence in the high quality office space in 2010 and demand for the Hubble Warf apartments remains strong.
Investment opportunities are still available at the Victorian Rutland Mills complex adjacent to the Hepworth Wakefield and the Calder River, with a 10-building historic regeneration development opportunity on a 2 hectare site available for mixed use. This will comprise the third and final stage of the development. Rutland Mills includes a large number of Victorian Mill Buildings and a Grade II listed Phoenix Mill identified for a 5 year programme of improvements. Work commenced in June 2011 to re-roof the Caddies Wainwright building which was completed in April 2012.
