Role Summary

As an apprentice you will spend 12 months in a paid job, working alongside our highly experienced team, who will support you as you learn. At the same time, you will work towards a qualification as an Optical Assistant and develop valuable skills.

There are long-term career prospects available following the successful completion of the apprenticeship. Starting rate of pay will be the National Minimum Wage for an apprentice of £3.90 per hour. 

Key Responsibilities

Optical Retail Assistants provide the first point of contact with customers and focus on customer service.

Key elements of the Optical Assistant’s job description include:

Customer Service

o    Exploring customer needs thoroughly and approaching customers to offer assistance

o    Assisting clients in selecting frames according to style, colour, fashion etc.

o    Dealing with customer enquiries both face to face and on the telephone

o    Preparing spectacles quotes for customers

Eye Examination

o    Performing pre-testing on patients including state-of-the-art eye photography

Optical Dispensing

o    Analyzing prescriptions accurately and dispensing lenses accordingly

o    Advise customers regarding lens types and choices

o    Order customer lenses

o    Customer adjustments and frame repairs

o    Manufacture of lenses and making-up customer spectacles

Stock Management and Merchandising

o    Arrange and maintain displays of optical merchandise

o    Stock control and ordering

o    Meet with Frame Suppliers and help select new stock

o    Keep up-to-date with current trends

Administration Tasks

o    Stock control and ordering

o    General shop duties such as cleaning, filing, faxing etc

o    Maintenance of customer database


Skills & Experience

Previous optical experience is not required. However you must be enthusiastic, good with people, happy to help,  take pride in your work and focused on customer service.

GCSE Grades A-C in English and Maths (or equivalent) are preferred, together with an organised and hard working approach.

Previous customer service experience and good computer skills would be desirable.
