Record Week for Wakefield Works 2017!

28 June 2017

More than 1,440 people looking for job opportunities took part in Wakefield Works last week, as the annual campaign to boost the employability and skills of local people embarked on a four-day tour of the district.

As part of a district-wide, annual roadshow which is delivered in partnership with Jobcentre Plus, job seekers were connected with local businesses who offered invaluable advice, guidance, an insight into their sector and where appropriate discussed specific job and work experience opportunities.

With record numbers attending each event, the Pontefract Jobcentre saw 301 people pass through its doors, in Wakefield 549, Hemsworth 250 and in Castleford 345.

More than 35 businesses, including TJX Europe Ltd, Poundworld, Fujitsu, Next Distribution, Community Integrated Care, KFC, PartyLite, Meridian Business Support, Asda and Ark Health also took part in the campaign, which had more job opportunities available than ever before.

Andy Turner, Co-founder of Wakefield Works comments: “What a week! Wakefield Works gets better and better all thanks to our partners at Jobcentre Plus and the businesses that offered their support. Everyone had the passion and determination to do the right thing for job seekers.

“We received fantastic feedback from all involved, especially the representatives from local businesses who were overwhelmed by the calibre and attitude of the people that they met.”

Sue Soroczan West Yorkshire Jobcentre Plus District Manager comments: “Wakefield Works is a great example of how working in partnership can make a real difference. We are really proud to say that Wakefield Works 2017 exceeded all of our expectations with even more businesses and claimants getting involved than ever before.

“Informal feedback has been exceptionally positive; job seekers spoke about the invaluable support that they received and businesses detailed several job offers and second stage interviews, which is fantastic. Whilst we won’t know the true impact for a few weeks yet, there are some great stories emerging that will no doubt be life changing!

“We would like to offer a huge thank you to everyone involved, especially the businesses and the JC Work coaches who all did a fantastic job in the run-up to the event and on each of the days.”
