WAKEFIELD BUSINESSES COLLABORATE TO DESIGN NEW DISTILLERY AT TILEYARD NORTH

02 December 2022

Creative businesses from across the Wakefield district have been working together to create something for residents, workers, and visitors to enjoy.

The collaborative project, which forms part of Phase 1 Tileyard North, has involved the expert design of a new distillery and bar for Forged Spirits, Wakefield-based producers of fine organic and certified craft gin. Forged Spirits have seen great success and rapid growth over the past couple of years and have commissioned a 300-litre purpose-built still alongside the launch of a dedicated distillery and bar at their new site.

Wakefield-based designers, Architecture 1B, the team behind The Supper Club, Unity Hall renovations and St John’s North restorations, have teamed up with Art House residents Rhubarb Design House to deliver the design for the bar, its look, and its branding.

The design project will provide Forged Spirits with a new base where the company will make their award-wining gin, vodka, and soon rum. The new bar will be adjoined to the distillery and will be fully visible from floor to ceiling via a viewing window that separates the two spaces.

The design of this distillery and bar is a wonderful example of the high-level skills within our community of creative businesses as well as the power of effective partnership working.

Gary Ford of Forged Spirits said, “At Forged Spirits we always try to support local businesses, our glass bottles are made in Knottingley by Stoelzle, our labels by The Label Makers of Bradford, our packaging comes from Packaging For Retail in Harrogate and all of our design and artwork is commissioned by Rhubarb Design House in Wakefield”.

“Partnering with an architect from Wakefield was an easy decision for us. Architecture 1B have worked with us to create an amazing Art Deco-inspired theme throughout our bar that is in perfect synergy with the beautiful 18th century building. We have picked out key points of design that accentuate the characteristics of the 18th century building and overlayed that with classic 1920’s opulence”.

“Alex and James at Rhubarb Design House also worked with us on the project to create our stunning logo and drinks menu for the bar, which is called “The Distillery”.

Darren Bailey, Director of Architecture 1B added “Architecture 1B are delighted to have assisted Forge spirits in the design of their new bar and distillery at Tileyard North”.

“The design combines the rich heritage of the listed Rutland mills and takes inspiration from the art deco styling of the branding produced by Rhubarb design house”.

“Located on the newly formed square and just off the Carding shed, it will service the development and visitors to the Hepworth along with the wider community of Wakefield.”

Forged Spirits move to Tileyard North is due to take place in the coming weeks

Wakefield prides itself on its creative flair, stemming from our heritage as makers and the home of Dame Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. It is great to see this creative gene which runs through our DNA thrive today.
