Architecture and urban design practice Farrells has been appointed to develop Wakefield's new city centre masterplan.

The practice will produce a vison and masterplan for the city centre, together with urban design and placemaking guidance, and a public open space strategy, as well as leading a team of supporting specialist consultants.

It has previously produced town centre masterplans for Sutton and Bolton.

The new masterplan aims to address a decline in the retail and business sectors within the city centre, as well as creating a vibrant city centre that is both fit for purpose and a hub for the creative and cultural industries.

Katerina Karaga, associate at Farrells, said: "The Wakefield City Centre Masterplan is an excellent opportunity to revitalise the heart of Wakefield and the retail core of the city. Essential to this is creating a dynamic and flexible masterplan able to stand the test of time and adapt to market needs.

"Our experience in town centre regeneration and understanding of cultural heritage allows us to embrace this challenge - we look forward to working closely with Wakefield Council and the wider project team."

Farrells will be support on the project by Aspinall Verdi, FutureCity, PJA and UK Networks.
