Wakefield Cathedral Backing the BID

Wakefield Cathedral has welcomed the Business Improvement District, hopeful it will boost its role as a cultural centre and focus for community work and the opportunity to unite local businesses.

Tony Robinson, Bishop of Wakefield and Jonathan Greener, Dean of the Cathedral applauded Wakefield BID’s ambition to make the city smart and attractive, and welcoming and accessible for all.

“The BID’s aim to have more ambassadors on the streets of Wakefield City Centre is good news for everyone whether it is for shopping, business or entertainment,” said Dean Jonathan Greener.

“Wakefield Cathedral has been central to community life since medieval times and today we strive through our ecumenical and arts work to ensure that everyone feels welcome and safe,” he added.

“Visitors travel from across the UK and further afield to Wakefield as part of the cultural draw of the Hepworth Gallery, Chantry Chapel and the Cathedral.  Many come in groups but some are on their own and to have a friendly face who can guide and signpost them would be a real asset to every business and organization in the city centre.”

Having spent more than £6 million on renovation work in recent years the team is keen that Wakefield Cathedral is used by as many people as often as possible.  There are regular day time services, concerts, events and workshops, helping to ensure it remains commercially viable and able to offer ecumenical support and a welcome to all.
