Wakefield District - A tale of contrasts…The story continues!
02 November 2016
On the 30th September the Community Foundation for Wakefield District held a packed out networking luncheon to unveil their plans for re-invigorating the Community Foundation and increasing its impact on communities throughout Wakefield District.
Founded in 2007 and active throughout the district since 2008, the foundation has already awarded over £1.4 million pounds to over 1,000 charities, community groups and individuals in need. Ultimately we improve lives and unite the people of Wakefield District through philanthropy.
Sir Rodney Walker- President of the Community Foundation for Wakefield District said
“Wakefield District is one of the largest in England, covering a large geographic area. It has a lot to be proud of and in recent years there has been significant investment which has bucked much of the national trend. However, despite this, there are still major pockets of deprivation and it is these areas that we are aiming to target”
Thousands of charities and voluntary groups work tirelessly to address these inequalities across the UK, and work together to help their communities. Wakefield Community Foundation invests in these groups in the Wakefield District and, where appropriate helps new ones to be formed.
With speakers including Tom Butler, Bishop & Chair of the CFW, Rebekah Tiler – Olympic Athlete for the British Team, the event was abuzz with supportive and active members of the Wakefield District business community, many who were surprised to find out exactly what the Foundation does, and how many people have already been supported.
As a result of the success of the Wakefield event, the foundation have arranged a second event in Pontefract, to better connect and share information with the 5 Towns and South East areas of the district, though all are welcome!
This exclusive networking luncheon will bring together the key businesses and influencers in the District to explain the plans for re-invigorating the Community Foundation and its impact on communities throughout the 5 towns.
The event is on the 18th November, between 12:00noon – 14:00pm, at the Kings Croft Hotel in Pontefract BOOK HERE
Whilst Business is doing extremely well in the District, continuing prosperity and growth depends on having a vibrant community with the relevant skills and aspirations. Unfortunately, there are still significant areas of deprivation within the District leading to low achievement and poor expectations. The Foundation believe it is very important that these contrasting elements are addressed by demonstrating how we can all work together to make a significant difference in our Local Community.
Speakers at the Pontefract event will include-
· Steve Greatorex, from Wakefield Whirlwinds Disabled Basketball team on how the Foundation had helped them
· A UK Community Foundation Spokesman
· A representative from Imagination Theatre, Castleford talking about how drama inspires deprived Children
· Tim Craven of WDH Castleford on fuel poverty in Social Housing.
Lunch will include a varied selection of sandwiches, pork pies, sausage rolls, delicious cakes, scones with cream and jam plus unlimited tea or coffee in the excellent surroundings of the King's Tickets Croft Hotel
