Monkeyfinger Custom Paint Dips into New Market
22 October 2015
Monkeyfinger’s Gavin Moore was both experienced and passionate about custom paint and design work. After several years working for other people he thought his talent would be better used in his own business, where he decided he could use his skills better with his own business.
With business partner James Megson they decided their business could provide something unique, different and desirable. Operating from a unit in Knottingley their award winning work is proving them right!
When they started out, whilst they knew the ins and outs of the trade they had no experience of running a business. Through a referral from a family member they were able to call on the bespoke support of a Wakefield Council Business Advisor who could ensure that their talents did not go to waste.
‘When we heard about the Wakefield Business Support Programme, we thought this could really help us make the leap from a business idea to the successful and well recognised business that Monkeyfinger is fast becoming. With the guidance of our adviser we were able to go from an idea to a fully operational business.’
‘Without that initial support from WBSP giving us confidence and knowledge, I think we would have taken a lot longer to get everything needed to make our idea a success. The WBSP allowed us to receive the support that was tailored to our needs as a business and having one-to-one contact with our own advisor made the whole experience very easy. We would definitely encourage any small business in the area to contact the Council for free business support.’
After 8 months of preparation the business launched and with a fast growing online following built through Facebook, twitter and their website they are now inundated with requests to dip, paint and finish cars, bikes and just about anything else!
‘We found Facebook has really helped our business. Being able to share photos of the finished work has built us a really big following and got us mentioned elsewhere online, particularly in the car and scooter forums where a lot of people are now hearing about us from.’
2015 saw one of their designs win the Isle of Wight Lambretta festival 1st prize for best scooter and this was soon followed by 1st prize at the Ford Fair.
‘We were really pleased that our work has resulted in these awards for our customers!. This kind of recognition is exactly what we wanted, and it has really helped to really build our reputation.’
The hydrographic printing that Monkeyfinger offers is something that few custom shops offer, and is a great way to add a bespoke finish to paintwork.
‘The dipping is probably our signature at the moment, basically we can transfer any printable image onto anything from a car and bike parts to phones or laptops.
‘For the future we can only aim to be bigger and better with what we offer and continue to provide the quality and service that our ever growing number of customers have come to expect.’
