Wakefield Council ‘Highly Commended’ at Apprenticeship Awards Ceremony

Wakefield Council has been 'highly commended' for its apprenticeship programme - which gives opportunities to young people from across the district to learn new skills to develop their careers.

The Council was recognised in the large employer category of National Apprenticeship Employer of the Year, at the Yorkshire and the Humber Regional Apprenticeship Awards 2015, held in Leeds. 

Wakefield's successful programme supports local youth employment, gives school leavers meaningful career options and helps retain talent in the district. Apprenticeships also help reduce the number of young people not in training or education in the district.

Alongside the Apprenticeship Hub which has placed over 300 young people in apprenticeships and continues to work with both young and people and local businesses, the Council has between 60 and 80 apprentices aged 16- 24, in placements ranging from information technology, to marketing, libraries and children's services.

The Hub has placed over 300 young people in apprenticeships, and the programme has been extended so that businesses of all sizes receive the same free and impartial support.

The Hub offers young people the opportunity to find secure employment whilst undergoing quality training with employers based in Wakefield District ranging from accountancy and legal services through to manufacturing & engineering.

Joanne Roney, chief executive at Wakefield Council said:

 "I started as an apprentice and I know from personal experience it is a route that offers young people the opportunity to learn and develop skills that will help them build their future careers.

 "Our programme aims to reduce unemployment, raise skills and aspirations in our district. Apprenticeships also help us to sustain a fresh workforce, with fresh ideas.

"We continually develop new and existing placements in the council, partnerships and other organisations, making the programme attractive to young people."
