Great Success As Vacancies Filled
30 September 2015
Jobcentreplus in partnership with Wakefield Council teamed up with the management suites at Trinity Walk and The Ridings Shopping Centre last week and hosted the first Wakefield City Centre jobs fair. Both days were jam packed with eager jobseekers following an extensive advertising campaign which embraced both social media and the production of thousands of flyers and posters.
The first event on Friday was held in the Ridings shopping Centre, opened by Cllr Denise Jeffery, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Skills, and Joy Glarvey, Customer Service Operations Manager. The second event was in Trinity Walk on Saturday. Within minutes of the events opening, the jobseekers started to arrive and the room was very busy and the flow of Jobseekers continued until 5pm on both days.
Retailers from across the city centre had been invited to attend the events to promote their vacancies, meet job seekers, complete applications and interview potential applicants. Local retailers that attended included BHS, M&S, New Look, J D Wetherspoons, Cedar Court, Toys R Us, The Entertainer, Frankie and Bennys, Sugarsole.
Jobcentreplus Business advisers and Wakefield Council staff welcomed applicants, promoted vacancies and encouraged jobseekers to apply. Employer information handouts from Jobcentreplus were on hand to offer further employer knowledge. For on line applications, Jobseekers were sign posted and offered support to apply on line at Wakefield Jobcentre.
Additional vacancies from employers that were unable to attend the event included JD Sports, Homemade Burger Co, Thornton’s, Ernest Jones, Iceland, Argos, Boots, Next, Warren James, Burger King, T K Maxx, River Island, Car Phone Warehouse.
‘I would definitely come to an event like this again; it was great to meet candidates face to face rather than just receiving a CV. I have at least ten follow up interviews booked in’
The view from Jobseekers was also really positive.
‘I would definitely recommend the event to friends and family, it’s been very useful, I got lots of information and help and now I know how exactly to apply for various jobs’.
We are aware that many vacancies have now been filled as a result of the jobs fair and interviews and further applications continue to take place.
