Wakefield Discounter Opens the Doors to TV Cameras!

One of Yorkshire's most successful entrepreneurs has again allowed TV cameras access behind the scenes at his thriving retail empire with store expansions, million-pound deals with Disney and price wars featuring in the new BBC series.

The latest series of Pound Shop Wars, is focusing on Poundworld boss Chris Edwards' expansion plans, after attracting weekly audiences in excess of five million first time around.

"We've had some truly dramatic moments over this last year, and the cameras have been around to catch them all," said Edwards.

"We can't wait to show viewers all the exciting developments Poundworld has undergone, and we think they'll love catching up with what we've been up to since the last series ended."

Boardroom discussions about a price battle being waged by two of Poundworld's major rivals featured in the first episode alongside the efforts of the customer-facing team at the discount brand's oldest store in Scarborough. Subsequent editions will showcase Yorkshire-born talent at head office and the company's Wakefield distribution centre.

Poundworld is one of the UK's best-known single-priced retailers with more than 300 stores nationwide, but the discounter started on a Wakefield market stall in 1974 before adopting the brand name in 2004.

In May, TPG Capital acquired a 70 per cent stake as part of a £150m deal. The retailer recently announced plans to open a new 524,000 sq ft distribution centre in Wakefield creating over 300 jobs alongside the opening of a further 150 stores UK wide in the next three years.
