LEWIS Moorhouse is celebrating a prestigious award win after tapping into Redrow’s apprenticeship scheme and embarking on a plumbing career.

The 22-year-old from Wortley, West Leeds, was named as Apprentice of the Year for the homebuilder’s Wakefield-based Yorkshire region as he embarks on his fourth and final year of training.

Lewis, who was runner-up in 2017, said he was surprised about the accolade presented at the developer’s annual Apprentice Excellence Awards, which celebrate the hard work and commitment of all apprentices across the Redrow business. 

“I didn’t expect to get it at all, especially with there being so many apprentices and so much competition,” he said.

But he added: “I’m delighted obviously. It’s good to know that you are doing well, and to get recognition for your work. It means a lot when it’s appreciated that you don’t just go on site and do your job but that you give it that little bit more.”

An apprentice plumber working with contractor John N Dunn at Redrow’s The Green development at Horsforth Vale, in Horsforth, Lewis took the plunge into a trade after taking A levels and deciding university life wasn’t for him.

He explained: “I decided that I’d rather get a trade. I went to Leeds College of Building and then was lucky enough to get an apprenticeship with Redrow in 2016. I’m earning and I’m learning, so it’s the best of both worlds, and I’m really enjoying it and site life.

“My mentor with John N Dunn is James Flynn and he is a great support and I’m learning so much from him. A lot is expected of you but that’s because they want to make you better, better at what you do. Hopefully that’s working and the award shows that.”

Rugby fan Lewis said the support from the sub-contractor, his mentor and from his employer Redrow, meant he always had someone to go to for support and encouragement, as well as his college tutors.

He will achieve an NVQ Level 3 and be a qualified plumbing and heating engineer when he successfully completes his fourth year.

He added: “I would love to get as many qualifications and courses under my belt while I can and then hopefully get a job with my contractor. I received a trophy and certificate for becoming Apprentice of the Year, as well as a cash prize, and my contractor took me out for a meal and bought me some tools - which is a great start to my career.”

“It is wonderful to see apprentices doing well and going on to successful careers, and we are delighted to have played our role. But the praise goes to them and, in particular, those like Lewis who go above and beyond what it expected of them to ensure they do a great job.”

Redrow offers a wide range of apprenticeships, including carpentry, electrical, bricklaying and plumbing, as well as office-based apprentices in a variety of administration, technical and commercial roles.

Around 15% of Redrow’s total workforce are apprentices or trainees and Redrow has been a Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer for many years.
