Pontefract selected as one of six destinations for new Airbnb campaign

September 20, 2019 - UK: Airbnb has launched a new campaign - with the help of the UK public - to boost tourism and the local economy in Pontefract.

The travel platform is offering to cover the cost of one night’s stay[1] for visitors to six destinations across the UK - the first offer of its kind from Airbnb - and Pontefract was voted for by more than 14,200 people as one of the destinations to participate in the new campaign[2].

From 20 September, “First Night On Us” from Airbnb will champion the historic market town, along with five other destinations, encouraging domestic travellers to rediscover the UK with affordable staycations.

With the Airbnb community boosting the UK economy by an estimated £4.2 billion last year alone[3], the new campaign aims to spread the economic benefits of tourism to destinations less travelled.

In addition to Pontefract, the chosen destinations include:

-Callander, Scotland

-Cushendun, Northern Ireland

-Pwllheli, Wales

-Appleby-in-Westmorland, England

-Croyde, England

Patrick Robinson, Airbnb, Campaign and Policy Director, EMEA, said:  “Our community of hosts and guests help to spread the economic benefits of tourism beyond the traditional hotspots, and we want to help more domestic travellers discover, stay in and explore the nation’s hidden gems, while putting money directly in the pockets of more local families, businesses and communities across the UK.”

Cllr Jacquie Speight, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: “We are delighted that Pontefract has been selected for this new Airbnb campaign.

“There are so many things to see and do in Pontefract and we are delighted that the castle was recently taken off the Historic England ‘at risk’ register, after a £5million conservation project was completed.

“It would be fantastic to bring more visitors to the area and show off our wonderful district.”

First Night On Us is rolling out across the UK on social, digital and print media and in cinemas. For those wanting to take a trip to Pontefract, Airbnb will release 180 coupons for the destination on 17 October. Visitors get up to £150 off their first night’s stay, when they book at least a two night stay in local accommodation on the Airbnb platform and the stay starts by 30 December 2019.

[3] Estimated direct economic impact is the sum of Homes host earnings and estimated guest spending in the UK in 2018. Host earnings is based on internal Airbnb data. Estimated guest spending is based on nearly 12,000 responses to a voluntary survey sent to a sample of Airbnb guest accounts that had taken a trip to those countries in 2018. No payment or other incentive was provided in exchange for completing the survey.
