Wakefield Westgate is Europe's Greenest Station
Thu 04 Dec 2014
As Wakefield Westgate station nears its first birthday, Wakefield once again leads the way in innovation as it is recognised as Europe’s greenest station building. Already awarded with a BREEAM Excellent rating for sustainable building design the station continues to go from strength to strength.
The Central Building Management System (BMS) ensures East Coast can stop cold winter draughts or summer heat waves affecting the ambient temperature. Along with the solar panels on the roof which not only feed power to the stations facilities but to the busy retail units of Costa Coffee, Subway, WH Smith and Greggs. Recycling almost all of the waste generated including the composting of left-over food, the station is a great example of environmental sustainability. The heavy rainfall the area gets is also put to use. All the rainwater that falls on the roof is collected, filtered and used for both staff and public toilets.
James Harbridge East Coast’s Environment Manager told Yorkshire Vision;
‘As well as reducing our carbon footprint because we’re not having to rely on pumped water from the local mains, we’re also taking some of the sting out of the tail of really heavy rainfall events that contribute to flooding of local streams and rivers.
As rainfall intensity increases this is an important part of the station’s contribution to local sustainability. It’s also an innovated use of rainwater and puts it to good use.’
The station is both functional and sustainable whilst celebrating the mining heritage of the area with the glazed black brick providing a striking frontage as you approach. Wakefield Westgate continues to be immensely popular with rail users and provides a sophisticated entrance to the city for all those that visit.
