Wakefield Council Commit to Moving Forward on Development Sites

A successful bid by Wakefield Council has unlocked £50k from the Government’s Site Delivery Fund to assist house building across the district.  Owners of sites with planning permission can now access additional resources at the Council including a dedicated officer to work with land owners and housing developers to bring forward homes on sites within the district that are stalled.

With the Council’s recent ‘Local Authority of the Year’ win at the Insider Yorkshire Property Industry Awards 2015, the authority want to continue its commitment to securing investment, creating and sustaining jobs and gaining a better understanding of the barriers SMEs may encounter in the planning and development process.

Cllr Denise Jeffery, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Skills at Wakefield Council said:

“Developing new housing is a key element to encourage economic investment in the district.

“The Council works hard to bring new businesses into the district and to encourage existing businesses to expand. So it is essential that we ensure housing supports growth and prosperity.”

With an increasing demand for housing the Council are keen to support small and medium sized housing developers to build successful housing developments and help them to navigate the planning process.  The Council is leading on this initiative, working in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to identify funding opportunities, business support and access to finance. The initiative will work towards removing any backlog of outstanding discharged planning conditions to help achieve the 8 week turnaround target for discharged planning conditions.

In early 2016 The Council along with our partners will hold an event aimed at engaging with Small and Medium Enterprises to address the potential barriers to development and to provide information on funding and support that can be accessed to unlock housing developments.
