Thu 10 Dec 2015
Wakefield Council is welcoming the Tour de Yorkshire back to the district as the race returns for its second year, next April.
Welcome to Yorkshire has today (Wednesday 9 December) confirmed the details of the race route. On the second day, Saturday 30 April 2016, the race will go from Otley to Doncaster. As part of this route it will come into the district through Knottingley, then Pontefract and Wentbridge, before heading to North and South Elmsall and out towards Hooton Pagnell.
Stage 2 also marks an important milestone for the Tour de Yorkshire, as the women's race will be held on exactly the same route as the men's race. The women's race will start in the morning and the men's race will begin in the early afternoon.
Wakefield Council Leader, Cllr Peter Box CBE, said:
"I am very pleased that we are welcoming this fantastic sporting event into another part of the district next year.
"This prestigious cycle race is an excellent platform to showcase what we have and bring visitors into the area. The inaugural race was a huge success, which saw thousands of people lining the streets and created a lot of excitement in cycling. I hope that next year's event will be just as successful, giving another huge boost to our district."
The Tour de Yorkshire race is organised by Welcome to Yorkshire and the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), in association with British Cycling.
As well as visiting the Wakefield district, the 2016 cyclists will also race from Beverley to Settle in Stage 1 on Friday 29 April and from Middlesbrough to Scarborough in Stage 3 on Sunday 1 May.
The first Tour de Yorkshire took place in July this year, It forms part of the legacy of the historic Yorkshire Grand Depart of the Tour de France in 2014.
