The Ridings Open Up For Artwalk Creative Evening
Mon 22 Sep 2014
Art lovers from across the district will have an extra reason to step onto The Artwalk this month, when The Riding Shopping Centre opens its doors to Artworld and Artworld2Gallery on Wednesday 24th September from 5pm until 9pm.
Reinforcing its position on Wakefield’s art scene The Ridings Shopping Centre will join the popular bi-monthly event that showcases local, national and international talent in a whole range of settings within Wakefield.
To mark the centre’s first involvement with The Artwalk, The Ridings’ resident art galleries will remain open on the evening of the event. Both galleries will also be offering a variety of craft workshops and demonstrations by occupying artists, allowing people to pick up hints and tips on how to improve their own artwork.
The evening will also officially reveal The Ridings Pillars of the Community project with local artist Ryan Baxendale. Started last month, the venture has seen Ryan transform five structural pillars inside the centre into unique pieces of art.
Each pillar captures the city’s history, landmarks and many of its iconic buildings in brightly coloured, modern paintings.
Ryan will invite members of the community to lend a hand in decorating one of the pillars specially chosen for the event, putting their own special mark on the structure.
Vicky Clapham, Marketing Manager at The Ridings Shopping Centre said:
“We are thrilled to be part of The Artwalk for the very first time. We have a number of talented artists who work within our galleries and are looking forward to being part of popular, cultural tour of the city.”
The decision to join the Artwalk follows the recent opening of a second art gallery, Artworld2Gallery, a sister store to Artworld and also the numerous projects over the last three years which has seen the centre support artistic work within the city, helping to establish itself as a creative destination.
