Seasonal range boost Card Factory sales

High street gift card retailer Card Factory has reported "robust" sales thanks to Valentine's Day and Mother's Day seasonal ranges, despite a "challenging consumer environment".

The listed business reported total group sales growth of 5.5 per cent in a trading update covering the six months ended 31 July 2019.

Like-for-like sales grew by 1.5 per cent, compared to a 0.2 per cent fall in the first half of 2018, which the company said represented a "robust sales performance in a challenging consumer environment".

Sales were boosted by a strong first quarter, underpinned by Valentine's Day and Mother's Day seasonal ranges.

In the first half, a net 26 new UK Card Factory outlets were opened, bringing the total UK estate to 991 stores, with a further seven in the Republic of Ireland.

Chief executive Karen Hubbard said: "Looking forward to the forthcoming key Q4 trading period, which will have a significant impact on the outturn for the full year, we believe we have the right ranges and products to deliver a good performance; although, we are cognisant of the economic and political uncertainty and weaker consumer confidence.

"The board anticipates profits for the full year to be broadly in line with its previous expectations."
