Internal work underway at £5m leisure centre in Minsthorpe
Tue 12 Sep 2017
Minsthorpe's new multi-million pound leisure facility has reached a landmark stage – with the internal building work well underway.
The exterior of the £5million building has been fully completed with the 100 tonne structural steel frame, brick work and roofing now all in place.
Cllr Jacquie Speight, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: "It's great news that we are now at the stage where the focus is on the interior of the building and we can see the fantastic new facilities taking shape.
"It is exciting that the project is moving forward to such a significant stage and we are well on the way to creating a modern, high quality leisure facility that local people want and that we are delivering for them."
The contractors, Willmott Dixon, have been on site since December and have moved over 4300 tonnes of earth, which has been recycled around the site.
The major project has also included groundworks that have seen the installation of 437 stone pile columns as well as completing the foundations with 30 tonnes of steel reinforcement and 275 tonnes of concrete.
The area continues to be a construction site and parents are being asked to ensure their children keep well away from the site.
Cllr Speight added: "We want everyone to stay safe. The site is still very busy and although the contractor has it fully secured it is important that people, especially children, do not try to enter the area."
The £5million centre, on Ash Grove, will house a 25 metre, six-lane, swimming pool, studio space and a 50 station air-conditioned gym.
The swimming area will offer activities for people of all ages and abilities, including those who want to learn to swim, as well as those who want to use water space to keep fit and active.
The planned studio space is also extremely versatile and could cater for a full range of activities from toddler soft play to body pump and Zumba
The leisure centre will offer car parking, cycle storage and a school bus pull in, all conveniently located on site.
It is expected that the new facility will open in Spring 2018.
