Harris Hits Thirty On High

Wakefield head quartered commercial design and planning group, The Harris Partnership (Harris) celebrates its 30th anniversary this month with record year-on-year growth

The group expects to post turnover of £7m for 2014, up 21.4%, with approximately £200m worth of national construction projects on site and a similar value of work already in the system for 2015 from across the commercial sector including leisure, office, hotel, industrial, education and retail as well as mixed-use schemes.

Harris Wakefield will contribute 60% of group turnover with current projects ranging from developing masterplans for the £70m re-development of Flemingate in Beverley town centre and a major regeneration scheme for South Shields Town Centre.

Harris has also designed and planned Haribo’s new £35m production facility at Castleford; is overseeing the Meadowhall Mall refurbishment for British Land and recently completed the Blackburn Wing, a radical design for a tree-house events venue which will form the centrepiece of the £5.5m masterplan for the Grade II listed Bowcliffe Hall at Bramham by the Bayford Group.

The firm’s strong performance following one of the most difficult economic periods for the construction sector has been aided by its long-standing track record delivering design-to-planning and project management for edge-of and out-of town retail schemes.

Established in Wakefield in1984 by John Harris, the firm won its first supermarket commission for Gateway in Immingham three years later followed by its first Aldi regional store appointment in 1991 providing an early foothold in the discount retail development boom.

Today, the Partnership employs 110 staff across four regional offices that also include Manchester, Milton Keynes and Reading and has established two specialist divisions  ‘Harris Project Management’ (planning and co-ordination through project lifecycle) and ‘Vector Design Concepts’ (interior design, landscaping and branding).

In 2014, The Harris Partnership achieved its highest ranking of 88th in the Royal Institute of British Architects Top 100 UK practices in 2014, having first broken through in 2004.
