Kudos to the top performing manufacturers in Wakefield

Wakefield Council has lauded the achievements of four local companies which have been named among Yorkshire's top 50 manufacturers in 2019 by the publication, Yorkshire Business Insider.

The businesses, located in Knottingley, Pontefract and Ossett, had incomes ranging from £146million to £328million, by the close of their last financial years, and recorded pre-tax profits ranging from £3million to £46million.

Topping the list in the district was Ardagh Glass of Knottingley with a turnover of £327.9million and a pre-tax profit of £46million. It is a leading global supplier of metal and glass packaging solutions for the world's leading brands.

The manufacturers of the well-known Haribo and Maoam sweet brands, Haribo(Dunhill) of Pontefract, was the second top performing company in the district. It grew income to £172.7million from £166million in its most recent accounts, boosted by the launch of new product Squidglets. The company grew by 1.4% at a time when there is a decline in the overall consumption in the UK confectionery market.

Extra Detail Limited, the holding company for Dovecote Park Limited in Pontefract, achieved a turnover of £170.8million and a pre-tax profit of £3.1million. Dovecote supplies the finest British beef, veal and venison to Waitrose supermarkets nationwide.

The Ossett-based producer of plastic products used in medical and electronics products, Carlo PLC, brought in a pre-tax profit of £8.2million and a turnover of £146.2million.

Wakefield Council's Corporate Director for Economic Growth and Regeneration, Tom Stannard, congratulated the companies on their strong performance.

He said the local authority would continue to support business growth and development across the district: "Wakefield continues to punch above its weight with four of the top 50 manufacturers in Yorkshire. The district has long been sought after by high-quality manufacturers, taking advantage of our strategic location and experienced workforce. We are proud of all our successful manufacturers from the small and niche to the world-renowned brands.

"We are really pleased that Haribo, Ardagh Glass, Extra Detail and Carclo are leading the line for the manufacturing sector. They are very important businesses for the wider local economy, providing employment for a large number of local people. We hope they continue to grow and thrive in the future. They also have a positive impact beyond their own operations, attracting and developing an eco-system of supply chain opportunities and act as magnets for investment.

"The manufacturing sector is a key area for growth and the Council is committed to supporting all our businesses, in the long term, as they form the backbone of growth and prosperity for the economy and local residents."
