Wakefield District has a very vibrant voluntary community which is rarely recognised. With these times of austerity resulting in further Council cutbacks, this district desperately needs more "Unsung Heroes" to step forward to fill the void and expand the "Big Society" ethos.
This is YOUR opportunity to celebrate the contribution made by those volunteers who are rarely if ever, in the limelight - our "Unsung Heroes". These people are out there working for all of us to make Wakefield district a better place to not only live but to do business.
Following our call for nominations we were actually surprised and delighted to receive so many. It was a very difficult job but our panel managed to shortlist these down to 12 inspirational volunteers from right across our district .
To give you a flavour of what to expect, the shortlisted nominees include:
A café owner who opens the doors to the needy & homeless each month and who goes out each evening with hot meals to feed the homeless and help them obtain the basics in life (clothes, toiletries etc) that we all take for granted.
An octogenarian who still volunteers every week after 34 years in helping the rehabilitation of those with an acquired brain injury through teaching woodwork & craft skills
A full time wheelchair user who puts her own disability on one side to help families with their own disabled children and the challenges they face. Not content with that, she has now started supporting adults with mental health issues.
This will be a real emotional roller coaster when you see the type of activities that run on a daily basis.=
Hosted by TV's Christa Ackroyd this promises to be a very memorable evening for all.
So come along, be enlightened about the good things going on across the Wakefield District, which we should all be very proud of, and enjoy a sumptious three course dinner. You are sure to be inspired by what you hear and see on the night! Tickets are only £50 each and our selling fast, so don't miss out.
