The Knottingley-based glass container manufacturer has been bought in a £75M management buyout from CBPE Capital with backing of £29.5M from Barclays Private Equity (BPE)

The deal adds to the private equity firm’s manufacturing portfolio, which includes aerosol manufacturer Aerocan and metallic gates and rolling shutters manufacturer La Toulousaine.

Allied Glass has a turnover of approximately £78M and was originally acquired from Associated British Foods in 2002 in a buyout backed by CBPE Capital. The BPE investment is allied to a reinvestment from management and senior debt facilities provided by HSBC Corporate Banking and Leveraged Finance and Lloyds TSB.

Allied Glass makes glass containers for the spirits industry, employing 630 people at sites in both Leeds and Knottingley. The company exports to countries such as France and Russia and is looking at new markets in places like Poland.

Director at Barclays Private Equity in the North, Steve O’Hare, said:

“Allied has amassed a strong stable of world-renowned customers, invested in flexible production facilities which complement its high value, low volume niche, and developed capabilities in the production of light weight containers. Taking into account its customers’ focus on building brand value through design, the company has successfully grown to become the fourth largest manufacturer of glass containers in the UK.”

Managing Director, Alan Henderson, said:

“BPE’s investment will provide us with the ability to further build on our established customer base and continue to develop our design offering. We will also be able to take advantage of acquisition opportunities as they arise.”
